IMDb's 2024 SXSW Cheat Sheet: Films You Need to Know About From the Fest3 of 14
Y2K
Kyle Mooney's take on what Y2K could have been like comes in the form of his sci-fi comedy backed by A24, who is tripling down on their promise to champion new directors. If the audience reaction at the premiere at SXSW was any indication, ‘90s kids are going to absolutely eat up Mooney’s millennial comedy. At any given point of the movie, the crowd at Austin’s Paramount theater was either laughing, dancing, or singing along to the nostalgic tunes of 1999. The movie is absolutely ridiculous, thanks to a ‘90s joke-stuffed script by Evan Winter. Mooney, the "SNL" vet who co-wrote and starred in Brigsby Bear, shows no hesitation in throwing everything at the screen at once. And let’s be blunt about this. There has never been enough Julian Dennison in a movie since Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Hollywood, please find this man the starring role he deserves.
